On August 14, 1939, Katye Louise Card was born to her parents Oda Gentry and Bennie Card in Auburn, Alabama. Katie was affectionately known as Louise to her family and friends. In the late 1950’s she left Alabama and came to Cleveland where she joined Second Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. Louise was a longtime, faithful, outstanding member of the church.
Louise worked at Lakewood Hospital for over 40 years of service until her health began to decline. Upon retiring she tutored students of all ages at Clara E. Westropp Elementary School, while concurrently attending Salvation Army Senior Citizen Program. Louise’s passion for politics led her to volunteer as a campaign worker with the “A-team” to help with setting up meetings, telephone solicitation, and assembling mailings for city officials.
Louise dearly loved all eleven of her siblings, but most affectionately her brother Arthur Card, who as she stated was “always ready to help” by cutting grass, providing transportation, and home maintenance.
Louise’s hobbies were reading books, magazines, and everything else she could get her hands on. She cherished completing crossword puzzles, watching Jeopardy, and dining out at Red Lobster or Cracker Barrel every Sunday after church. Louise treasured traveling on to Niagara Falls, Canada, Washington, DC, and the Amish country on many occasions.
Louise always put her children first and foremost. She sacrificed many material items to provide for her children; daughter Pamela Menefee Jones, son Wendell Card (deceased 2009), grandsons; Esau Bangura (Washington, DC) and Michael Jones. Siblings; sisters, Bennie Royal (Indianapolis, Indiana), Uynella (TC) James (Cleveland, Ohio), Ritchie Humphrey (Cleveland, Ohio), Annie Frank Card (deceased) Mae Joe Miller (deceased). Brothers; John Otis Card, Arthur Card Sr., (Cleveland, Ohio) Dexter (Shirley) Card (Auburn, Alabama), Darius Card Sr. (deceased), Gentry Card (deceased), Nathaniel Card (deceased), Aunt; Fannye Holivay, good friends Mildred Ellis, Cherry Heard, Cousin Dorothy Campbell, Nurse Cynthia Thorpe and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
