Maher Fred Assad

October 7, 1986 — April 16, 2021

It is with deep sadness that our family announces the passing of our loving son and brother, Maher Assad.

Maher was born in Fairview, Ohio on October 7, 1986. He grew up in Westlake and graduated from Westlake High School. He was loved by all who knew him. His smile and laughter lit up the lives of his family, friends and coworkers. He had a kind and loving heart – full of so much love.

Maher was a thoughtful soul and will be remembered for his caring nature. He was ready to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He was giving and thought about others first. His work ethic was unmatched and he was committed to supporting his parents, brothers, sister and grandparents in any way he could. His family was number one to him. His brothers and sister looked up to him and could count on him for anything.

Maher is survived by his loving mother and father, Summaya and Fareed, brothers Mohammed, Osama, Hamza, and sister Samah. He also leaves behind his grandmother, Fahmia, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and hundreds of friends who love him, both in the U.S. and overseas.

Maher was a devout Muslim. His faith was an integral part of his life. He was gracious and celebrated all of life’s gifts.

He was also deeply connected to, and proud of, his family’s culture and traditions, both in the Cleveland community and overseas. He made multiple trips to Jerusalem, Palestine with his family and grandfather, Ismail, with whom he had a special bond, up until he passed away last year.

Maher was an avid Cleveland sports fan, through and through. He loved watching his Brownies, Cavs and Indians ever since he was a boy. He loved sports in general, as seen by his impressive collection of Cleveland pride gear, sports jerseys and sneakers.

Maher, or “Chuck” to his family and friends, was lighthearted, warm and funny without even trying. He was our shining light. His sense of humor, jokes and unique laugh alone could make anyone around him join in.

Maher also had a special bond with children. He knew how to make them laugh and feel loved. His younger cousins were always excited to see Uncle Chuck walk through the door. Maher left behind countless unforgettable memories we will all cherish forever.

Our family finds peace that Maher passed on a Friday, a holy day in Islam, and during the holy month of Ramadan, which is when the gates of heaven are wide open.

We love you, Maher. You were an incredible son and brother. Thank you for touching our lives and making us proud for 34 years. You will be sorely missed every day. The memory of you will be eternal. May you Rest in Peace. Allah Yerhamak.

Thank you to all who have expressed their condolences, prayers and beautiful stories of Maher.

Let us continue to pray, share these stories and make du’a so his legacy lives on.
