Dr. Randall H. Travis, age 98, passed away on November 18, 2022, of long-term health complications, with family at his side. He is survived by his son Randall Jr, daughter Laura, grandson Mark, sister Jannae, nephews Oz and Charles and his wife, Dr. Ilona Engel. Dr. Travis was born in Curdsville, KY on July 11,1924, and served in the US Marine Corps from 1943-46. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1947 and received his MD degree in 1952 from Western Reserve University. Post residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland, he worked as a Research Fellow in Physiology and Medicine and then was on the faculty of CWRU until 1984. He served as Consulting Physician at several Cleveland hospitals, practiced medicine at Metro General Hospital and taught in the Medical School. He was passionate about his research in the field of Endocrinology with numerous publications, obtaining grants from NIH, the American Heart Association, the Diabetes Association and others. He was Chairman of various CWRU and UH committees and was Founder and Director of the Diabetes Consulting Service at Metro General Hospital. Dr. Travis moved to Vermont in 1984 and became a country doctor practicing medicine in affiliation with Copley Hospital in Morrisville, VT, until his move back to Cleveland in 2015. He was an active outdoorsman and throughout his life he shared his love of nature with friends and family through many backpacking, hiking, rock climbing, mountaineering, cross country skiing and snowshoeing adventures. He also was a voracious reader. In his later years he focused on scientific and philosophic areas. Ever the scientist, he would bring objectivity to any discussion of politics, and other current events. Music, both classical and country, were much relished. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. Family will welcome friends at a Celebration of Life at Judson Manor on December 17, 2022, 1890 E. 107th Street, Cleveland, OH from 4:00-6:00 PM.
