Zelma Jean Greynolds (nee Jones) 93 of Cleveland passed away peacefully on July 11, 2021, at home surrounded by family. She is survived by her husband, Phillip, and son Howard (Mary Ellen Kearney) along with three grandchildren Claire, Cormaic, and Manus who lovingly referred to her as “Zoom”. Born November 12, 1927, in Rosemont, West Virginia, to Madison and Nellie (Nestor) Jones, she was one of ten children.
Retired after 25 years at Lakewood High School, where she worked in the food and custodial departments, Zelma was never shy of an honest day’s work. She continued staying busy going to work for Charles Slone and Christopher Sterben, who treated her like their own, keeping her active and out of trouble.
Zelma was a one of a kind, whom many may recognize as the lady who started a conversation with you in the check-out line, restaurant, or the doctor’s office. Her ability to immediately bring you up to speed on the happenings of her family, a trip she just took, or any number of random people you’d never met were the stuff of legend. Her smile and whimsy demeanor commanded your attention and made you feel like she was sharing secrets she had been sworn to protect. There were never any strangers only people she hadn’t met yet.
